For the fourth cigar I look at from 2018’s SnS kit, I’m going with #2. First things first…I forgot to measure this one before I left the house, so I’m not sure exactly what the size is…I’m just eyeballing it.
Today I decided to go to Monkey Town Brewing Company and write this while sitting in their outdoor area. They have a nice outdoor area with a few picnic benches under a large tree. It’s a little early and there isn’t much shade yet, but in a few weeks (probably around the time this posts), it’s going to be a spectacular place to enjoy a cigar and beer.
Although at Monkey Town, I went with a beer by Back Forty, Peanut Butter Porter. Back Forty is out of Gadsden, Alabama, not too far south and west of Chattanooga. They describe this as “creamy” and “big” with a “malt bill thick enough to slather on some bread.” It weighs in at an impressive 10.5% ABV.
Notes
I started with the beer, as usual. Being a porter, this beer was not quite as dark as most of the stouts I’ve been partaking in lately. With a bit of sunlight backlighting the beer, I could see some reddish brown notes to it. It tasted sweet and very peanutty. How is this different from a peanut butter stout? Hard to say…maybe just a little lighter in body than a stout would be.
The SnS #2 had a medium-brown color with a slightly sweet, slightly earthy aroma to it. Judging from the look, smell and slight toothiness of the wrapper, my best guess was this may be Connecticut Broadleaf, but Rosado, not Maduro. I clipped it and took a cold draw, getting earth and hay mostly, but there was a bit of sweetness in the cold draw, too.
After I lit it, I got a good amount of pepper spice, as well as cedar and cinnamon notes. Earthiness came in behind that along with some bittersweet chocolate. The cigar continued on earthy and spicy, while the beer added a substantial amount of roasted nuts and sweetness. Good pairing…great location.
