I realized not that long ago that out of all the cigars that I have smoked this year, I have not once reviewed anything new from my friends at Crux Cigars. To be perfectly honest, I don’t think I have smoked many Crux cigars this year. “Out of sight, out of mind” is the phrase that comes to mind that I’m sure many of us suffer from when it comes to cigars. With all that being said, my attention was gathered when I saw their press release describing their newest cigar: the Crux Epicure.

The back story on the Crux Epicure describes a long awaited release to market:

After initially being announced at the 2016 IPCPR Show, sampled at the 2017 IPCPR Show, and a limited release, the Crux Epicure may be the most anticipated release by Crux Cigars to date.

After awaiting a release that long, I would be anxious to get it to the public as well. Let’s find out if the Crux Epicure was worth the wait.

No construction on the cigar chosen for review (two sent in total). The pre-light aromas gave me complementing notes of wood and something like a sweet bread while the cold draw provided an additional sweetness to the palette. I opted for a straight cut on the guillotine and after the light was greeted with a balanced draw with opening flavors of spice, wood and that sweet bread flavor from the cold draw. The strength on this I would consider medium bodied with an easy and smooth finish. All the cigar smokers I know would be all over this cigar just on the ease of the Epicure’s smoking alone.

The flavors from the opening more or less stayed as is until the halfway mark of the cigar where I noticed stronger spice notes with less over bread notes. Twelves minutes after that, touches of pepper began entering in the palette while the overall strength of the cigar began slowly creeping upwards. The Crux Epicure finished out its smoking time of a short 0:59 right in a comfortable medium bodied strength.

I encountered zero problems with the cigar. This was the first time in a long time that seemed to have smoked much faster than the others but it could have been me.

Construction: 2/2
Flavor: 4.5/5
Value: 1/1
Total: 9.5/10

To recap the Crux Epicure:

  • Fantastic cigar with a great combination of flavors coupled with an ease of strength. It’s a nice balance that will attract many cigar smokers of all levels.
  • $10.00 a cigar is fair for this. The Crux Epicure reminded me of some of the rarer cigars I have smoked this year but without their price tag.
  • Having reviewed many of the Crux line, I think the Epicure represents the best choice for those looking for a complex yet lighter smoke.
  • I’m probably going to be making a purchase of these on my next payday, as I think they will make a great “humidor stuffer” for my wife and I.

Big thanks to Crux Cigars for the samples and thanks to all of you for taking time out of your day to read what I write. I always look forward to the next time I am able to share my thoughts with all of you.
