It’s great to be at the right place at the right time, especially if that place is your favorite cigar lounge where a rep from a particular brand is handing out free sticks Such was the case a couple of months ago at Islands where Chris from Dona Flor handed out The Selecao, a Brazilian cigar The wrapper, filer, and binder are a combination of Mata Norte and Mata Fina tobaccos.
The wrapper is a medium brown with an oily feel to it. I got a faint barnyard from the body and hardly any aroma from the foot. Once lit, the Selecao displayed a nice smoothness with hints of wood and natural tobacco sweetness. The retro-hale had a nutty flavor. The draw was near perfect, the burn line razor-thin and arrow-straight, and the ash was rock solid. The ash was so firm in fact, I was able to smoke up to the half way point before having to tap off. It was more of a “forced break” rather than a tapping off. The flavor profile did not change during the middle third, but during the final third a nice underlining sweetness came through. It was a pleasant surprise adding to the overall enjoyment of the cigar.
The Selecao is a mild enough cigar for any smoker. If you can find them, give them a try.
