Cigar Review: Espinosa Maduro

Espinosa MaduroOriginally published at Tiki Bar Online

Corona, 5” x 42 ring gauge

Today I will be reviewing the second cigar in the special Espinosa Cigars coffin from the Chattanooga Tweetup. The first one can be found here. From what I can tell it is the same Nicaraguan blend as the Habano with the exception of the Mexican maduro wrapper. I was able to only smoke this cigar for the review.

The wrapper on this cigar was a nice even dark chocolate brown in color. There were a few scattered fine veins to the oily wrapper as well. When I gave it a squeeze there were no soft spots and it was fairly firm to the touch. When I put my nose to the wrapper I got a light barnyard aroma with an intense barnyard coming from the foot. After clipping it and taking a cold draw on I got the taste of milk chocolate with a good draw.

The cigar starts off with the tastes of chocolate, leather, cinnamon with a red pepper spice on the retrohale. The cigar started off in the medium full range. I did feel like I had to keep puffing on it to keep it lit. By the end of the first third the spice had mellowed out a lot, but not gone completely away.

As I moved into the second third the strength stayed in the medium full range in spite of the spice mellowing down. The main flavors I noted in this third were chocolate, leather, coffee, with hints of cinnamon and green herbal spice. The burn continued to good and the draw loosened up a bit.

Once I moved into the final third I started to get a slight nicotine hit from it. During this third the chocolate flavors went away while I noted there were lots of coffee, leather and earth with a hint of cinnamon notes. The spice did start to come back as well.

Overall I quite enjoyed this cigar in spite of the annoying draw issues. I can’t remember if I’ve had the maduro in a large size, but I believe I have, but I would definitely pick up this one again to see how the production sizes compare to this one. I wouldn’t recommend this to those that might be sensitive to nicotine, but the rest should be able to enjoy it.
