On my way back from Atlanta a couple of weeks ago, I stopped by the Burns East shop in Chattanooga. I picked up a few sticks, including a couple of the Burns La Aurora exclusive. I enjoy La Aurora cigars, as well as Cameroon wrappers, so how could I refuse?  Based upon the Cien Anos, the Burns edition also has Dominican binder and filler, but is uniquely wrapped in Cameroon, giving it a La Aurora signature.

The Burns cigar had a nice milk chocolate brown wrapper, with no noticeable defects. Giving it a little squeeze, the cigar springs right back.  And the cap had a tiny little pig tail to it as well.  The pre light notes were of sweet tobacco, and a hint of vanilla.

After snipping the cap and torching the foot, I got a bit of graham cracker and some all-spice.  Shortly afterwards, the profile changed to some pepper over a background of leather and tobacco.  The ash held on for a good inch, and did something unique: it split down the middle. It was more comical than anything and not something that would be of any concern.

By the time I had reached the middle of the cigar, all the notes I found left and the stick mellowed out to a singular vanilla/Carmel note.  As I progressed further through the midsection, the pepper aspect returned.

Finishing up the cigar, the pepper faded away and leather became the predominant note.  And near the nub, I again noticed the sweet tobacco taste come back.

The burn was great throughout.  I never needed a touch-up, and the burn remained rather even from start to finish.  And not once was there a lack of smoke. Plenty for those who enjoy making rings, or sailing ships if you’re Gandolf the Grey.

In summation, I was pleasantly surprised with this smoke.  This offering kept me guessing, and didn’t change flavours at the traditional 1/3 sections.  It constantly evolved throughout the event, some parts lasting longer than others.  It wasn’t a strong cigar, more of a medium bodied option but flavourful and not overly complex.  I would definitely recommend this for most anyone.  So if you have a chance to stop by Burns in Chattanooga, do so. Or give them a ring (423-855-5200) and they’ll ship some to you.

  2. Sounds like a decent cigar. I have had the “split” of the ash once or twice before, kind of interesting. Don’t smoke nearly enough La Aurora, maybe Ill look into getting a few.
