Being a busy freelance musician, I often get the opportunity to perform in some very interesting places. One place in St. Louis that I have performed numerous times over the years is the Missouri Athletic Club. While performing there for a wedding reception last weekend, I got there early enough to get setup and relax at their bar with one of my musical colleagues. After a quick drink, I made my way towards the upstairs, only to be stopped by the front desk shop at the foot of the stairs up. That shop, within their glass showing cases, contained a fair number of cigars for sale. I had a few minutes to kill, so I was more than happy to peruse the selection. It didn’t take me long to find one cigar that stuck out among the rest: a Missouri Athletic Club House cigar – and for a more-than-fine price per cigar at that. I bought two right then and there and stuck them in my horn case for safe keeping. I called them later in the week to see if I could get further information on the cigar but what I got was incomplete. I’ll investigate a bit further and see if I can report back in a future ‘Smoking Chair’ article.
The second of the two cigars purchased was the one that I ended up reviewing. No construction issues to be found anywhere on the cigar. The pre-light aromas were a pleasant mix of wood and cocoa while the cold draw brought a very faint wood to the palette. The draw on the cigar was nicely balanced once cut. The start of the cigar brought about an equal mix of dull pepper, wood and leafy greens with a medium bodied strength with a bit of bite on the aftertaste. Interestingly, the flavor profile on this cigar stayed as is more or less throughout the entirety of smoking this cigar. At the 43 minute mark, the pepper and wood notes began growing on the palette while the strength started inching ever stronger. 25 minutes after that, the MAC House Cigar was fully into full bodied territory while the wood and pepper. And 10 minutes after that, the cigar was finished. Total smoking time on the cigar finished out at 1:19.
The cigar smoked perfectly without any issues, minor or major, creeping into its lifespan. All in all, this turned out to be a nice surprise on the evening.

To recap the Missouri Athletic Club House Cigar:
- A nicely balanced medium bodied cigar that has some depth of strength especially by the end. It isn’t overly complex in flavor but what is there is more than fine.
- I think the majority of cigar smokers could enjoy this without an issue.
- $6.50 a cigar is a steal for these cigars.
- Given that I perform there at least a few times a year, I now know what I’ll be picking up everytime I’m there. Should you ever make it to St. Louis and need a cigar, keep these in mind.
