Cigar Review: Oscar Valladares Super Fly

Cigar: Oscar Valladares Super Fly
Size: 6×54 Toro
Wrapper: Mexican San Andrés
Binder: Honduras
Filler: Honduras, Dominican Republic and Nicaragua
MSRP: $10.80 from my local Tinder Box

My first experiences with the work of Oscar Valladares came with the Leaf by Oscar series and the Island Jim (all fantastic, many of them reviewed here). And while I have seen the Leaf by Oscar series of cigars at my local shops, some of his other lines has been missing…at least until my most recent Tinder Box visit. Stopping by to grab a few cigars last week, I found the new editions to his area of the humidor, the Super Fly among them. It was released at last year’s IPCPR and was touted at the time as being the strongest release at that time.

No construction issues found on the lone Super Fly purchased. I dug the 70s vibe from the purple band. The pre-light aromas from the cigar were faint, consisting of wood and something cherry like. The cold draw was all sparse among the palette with barely perceptible notes of wood and baking spices. The draw was balanced but had a slight pull on the draw. The opening flavors brought light wood, greens and hints of graham cracker on the aftertaste. For being touted as the strongest cigar to date for Valladares, it rang in around medium bodied to start out. Everything held firm until the 28 minute mark where I started finding more wood notes on the palette coupled with the addition of something akin to white pepper creeping in. After another 34 minutes was where I began the strength of the cigar gravitate into the medium-to-full range. By this point, the white pepper notes were gone but more wood along with black coffee flavors shone through to the palette. These flavors finalized the last 17 minutes of the cigar. The Super Fly finished at a leisurely 1:20 smoking time.

Minus one minor burn correction, the Super Fly smoked true and without issue. All and in, it represents what I would expect from a cigar make from Oscar Valladares.

By-The-Numbers
Pre-light: 2/2
Construction: 2/2
Flavor: 4/5
Value: 1/1
Total: 9/10

To recap the Oscar Valladares Super Fly:

  • Good flavor and a nicely balanced build of strength in the Super Fly to make the majority of cigar smokers happy.
  • Most cigar smokers could smoke this without getting scared off.
  • Just over $10 per cigar is fine with me.
  • I’ll be getting more of these when the wallet can justify it. And expect to see the other cigars I found at Tinder Box reviewed over time.
