Anyone who knows me well enough or has followed me on Twitter for a long period of time knows that I am a fan of CroMagnon cigars. I’m happy to say that I even played a small part in getting them to my favorite brick and mortar (giving a cigar or two to the general manager and asking for them to bring them in everything I visited helped). So when I stopped by there this past weekend, Jay (their general manager) was kind enough to inform me that the CroMagnon Fomorians, or CroMagnons with a Candela wrapper[1], were in-shop. Being that my experience with Candela wrappers was severely lacking and that I’m always opening to trying any cigar from Skip and Michael, I bought a couple to try and report on.

Taking the Fomorian out of the plastic, I found zero imperfections in the wrapper and nothing that would indicate a tobacco packing issue. Jay was quick to tell me at purchase that the wrappers are more delicate than the ones used on the standard CroMagnons, so I was a bit more careful in making my punch. The pre-light flavors gave me strong notes of hay and straw. It honestly reminded me of being out in the field with my grandfather picking up straw bails.

My first draws after the light were perfectly balanced and gave me immediate hits of mild pepper. When the pepper died down after a few minutes, I was left with herbacous flavors for the majority of the cigar’s smoking time of 1:32. These flavors to me were reminiscent of fresh basil and cilantro. While the flavor profile struck me as unique, none of it felt out of place nor overpowering. I would classify the Fomorian as a medium bodied cigar, perhaps inching closer to medium-to-full right at the end with a medium finish.

No issues were encountered with the cigar. The burn stayed even and true the whole way without any corrections. The ash stayed tight to the end of the cigar, giving me a false sense of “ash security” (thankfully did not get any on myself). All in all, it was an incredibly pleasant cigar that only because of its CroMagnon heritage, I wanted just a little bit more strength in the flavor.

• A smooth medium bodied smoke that has a unique flavor profile because of its Candela wrapper.
• This cigar can be smoked by both new and veteran cigar smokers.
• If the CroMagnon cigars give you pause because of their full-boded strength, look to the Fomorian instead.
• While the EMH and Mandible are still my top favorites in the CroMagnon line, the Fomorian is in contention for the cigar when I want something different. I will be picking up more of these in the future.
