I can always count on Matt, one of my two best friends in the world, to talk cigars with me at any given time. It’s more or less a weekly occurrence, thanks to the power of a Telegram call. In one of his recent trips with his family to Florida, he was able to sneak away and spend a little bit of time at the Sosa Family Cigars in Disney. Not too long after his trip, I got a package from him with a couple of cigars from his visit. His instructions were to enjoy them and if I found some time, to do a review of one of them. And as he knows my cigar habits as well as anyone, it was more or less obvious to him which cigar he should send to me for review (hint – maduro wrapper). Sosa is a brand that I see in my local shops once in awhile. And while I recognize the brand, it’s one among many that I often overlook for more familiar brands. Thanks to Matt’s generousity, I was more than happy to give Sosa and its Piramides #2 Maduro my full attention.
No construction issues found on this cigar (he only gave me one of these). The pre-light aromas on this were an enjoyable blend of bitter cocoa and leather while the cold draw brought about mild spice on the tip of the tongue and wood. The draw was nicely balanced with the cut and the cigar started its flavor palette with a strong dose of black coffee and leather. Like many other maduros I have smoked in the past, you shouldn’t let the wrapper scare you away. The medium bodied strength coupled with the opening flavor notes makes this a smooth smoking cigar that is easier on the palette than one would think by first glance. 30 minutes in, I noticed heavier leather and wood on the front of the palette while the black coffee notes from the beginning began to become almost an aftertaste or finish on the exhale. 15 minutes after that, the aforementioned flavors flipped, allowing the black coffee to take control once again while the finish was on the leather. The last 47 minutes of smoking brought about a mild increase in strength while bringing strong black coffee, leather and wood notes to finish out the cigar. Total smoking time on the Sosa Piramides #2 Maduro was 1:32.
The only issue I had was maybe a quarter of the way through the cigar where I began to notice a bit of an uneven burn. After a burn correction and relight, the Sosa was smooth sailing after that. All in all, this was an enjoyable cigar to smoke and one I am going to have to keep my eyes open for in the future.

To recap the Sosa Piramides #2 Maduro:
- This to me is a great example of a maduro cigar for those who want to dip their smoking skills into something that is not mild. The Sosa Piramides #2 Maduro gives a great balance of strength with a friendly and easy smoking flavor profile that can be enjoyed at anytime.
- As it is well under $10 a cigar, this is a great value in my opinion.
- And as I stated above, I’ll be looking out for these. They are on my list to be smoked again.
A big thanks once again to Matt for the cigar. Happy Friday the 13th for those of you that observe that sort of thing (my grandmother does not leave her home on any Friday the 13th). And thank you all for reading. I look forward to the next time I can share my thoughts with you.
