Villiger Cigars keeps showing up on my radar, and I’m certainly not upset by this. The last couple of cigars that I have been able to try from them have been great. The latest one that you’ll be reading about is one that debuted at the IPCPR in 2015. The San’Doro Maduro is unique in that it is a Brazilian Puro, meaning that all the tobacco from this cigar comes from one country. Brazil has been in the limelight for Villiger in the last week, as the company opened a new factory in Bahia. This cigar, among a couple others in the Villiger lineup, come directly from this particular factory.
No construction issues found on the cigar chosen for review. I opted for a punch with this cigar, as this was what I have been using to ‘cut’ my cigars in the last week to simply change things up. The pre-light aromas brought wood and leather notes while the cold draw brought an interesting pairing of faint molasses and pepper. The light, coupled with the punch, brought a nicely balanced draw with opening notes of dull pepper, wood and black coffee. Don’t let the tasty Brazilian wrapper scare you off; it isn’t as strong as it could be. I would characterize it around medium-to-full bodied and very easy on the palette. The 29 minute mark brought about heavier pepper notes while keeping the rest of the flavors and strength as is. 20 minutes after that, the coffee notes began coming out more and more in the palette. The final flavor that came about at the 91 minute mark were heavy wood and leather, coupled with finishes of leather. The total smoking time for the Villiger San’Doro Maduro was 1:37.
Like other recent cigars I have reviewed, the Villiger San’Doro Maduro was a model citizen with no burn corrections, wrapper breaks, draw problems or anything else out of the ordinary. This was an incredibly pleasant cigar that I believe could find its way into many varying smoking situations.

- For those looking for a balance of strength and smooth flavors while searching for something different, start right here. And because of that balance, you could smoke this cigar in a number of different situations (morning/afternoon/evening coffee, golf course, etc.)
- While it wants to get stronger near the end, I think the majority of cigar smokers could enjoy this while not being taken aback by the dark wrapper.
- Under $10 a stick. That’s what I like.
- The next time I order from Cigars International, a five pack of these is getting added to the cart.
