Cigar Review: Warped Futuro

Warped FuturoVitola: Seleccion 109 (belicoso-ish)
Size: 6″ x 52 ring gauge
Price $8.99
Purchased from Maxamar’s Cigars

Background

Today I take a look at the latest release from Warped, the Futuro.  This cigar is a collaboration between Kyle Gellis of Warped and Max Fernandez of Casa Fernandez, where they tried to make something different than both companies had produced before.  The cigar was debuted at the most recent IPCPR show.  Dave was able to do a preview of it here.  The cigar comes in only two sizes, a 5.625″ x 46 Seleccion Suprema and the 6″ x 52 Seleccion 109 I’m reviewing today.  They are comprised of Nicaraguan corojo 98 and corojo 99 fillers, Nicaraguan criollo 98 binder and a Nicaraguan corojo 99 wrapper.  The come packed in boxes of 20.  While they aren’t a limited edition their production will be limited.  I smoked one of each size before this review.

Prelight

While the cigar is named Futuro, the band has a steampunk vibe to me, which they might have been going for.  The wrapper was  nice, even medium brown in color, with a good amount of oils but very little tooth.  When I gave it a squeeze it was fairly firm with no soft spots.  Putting my nose to the wrapper there is a light leather, with barnyard coming from the foot.  After clipping it taking a cold draw on it there was a good draw with a light cedar and leather flavor.

Flavor

The cigar starts off with a medium spice on the tongue and retrohale, with flavors of leather, wood, and nuts with a sweet finish.  The spice did die down after I got an inch in.  The cigar is firmly medium strength to start.  The second third saw the sweet finish intensify with the spice almost going completely away.  The flavors were very leathery and nutty with hints of green herbs thrown in.  The cigar didn’t gain or lose any strength.  The final third didn’t see much change in flavors, but the spice did start to come back slightly.  It intensified a bit but never got out of the upper end of medium.

Construction

The draw and burn on this cigar was perfect throughout.

Value

I was very happy to hear that these were going to be reasonably priced.

Conclusions

I definitely enjoyed this cigar.  It probably would be something that most smokers could enjoy.  I think it would be a very good morning or first cigar of the day for me, and will be picking up some so I can do thay.  I will also mention that I preferred the 109 size over the Suprema size.  If you’d like to try one for yourself, our sponsor Small Batch Cigar has them here, and the ‘leafenthusiast’ code is still valid.

Great cigars! I find them to be pretty darn spicy and full…So far I think I prefer the Suprema size but maybe because I’m partial to the corona gorda? This is a cigar that has half of its flavor/spice through the retro. Great review!

Seems like a good cigar. Not a fan of the look of the whole thing but who cares as long as it tastes good
