Back in March, I was fortunate enough to be able to be able to review the Debonaire Sagita. And since that review, that cigar has floated in and out of my mind. My good fortune continued a few weeks ago when I found a package containing the Debonaire Daybreak. Continuing their ‘ultra premium’ standard across their cigar lines, the Debonaire Daybreak was introduced at the IPCPR last year with the purpose of creating a cigar with a higher quality Connecticut wrapper. While I am usually one to go for fuller bodied cigars and/or those that have a Habano or Maduro wrapper first, my recent experience with the Debonaire Sagita brought about added excitement in trying the this new arrival.

No construction issues with the cigar chosen for review. The pre-light aromas were an interesting blend of fruit and florals while the cold draw brought about faint fruity and herbal notes. The cigar, once light, gave me a balanced draw with opening flavor notes of wood, herb and faint pepper on the aftertaste. The cigar hovers around medium bodied in strength; I could even see a few people say that it’s a step under that. Until I hit the hour smoking mark on the cigar, the cigar’s strength and flavor profile mentioned above stayed exactly as mentioned. At that hour mark was where I noticed overall stronger notes of wood with a diminishment of the herb and pepper flavors. The strength of the cigar moved up slightly but was still well within the medium bodied range. The overall smoking time on the Debonaire Daybreak was 1:22.

The Debonaire Daybreak turned out to be a model citizen in terms of smoking. It had a perfect draw and burn, requiring no touchups or relights. About a minute or two after lighting, my wife who was sitting next to me asked what I was smoking. After telling her, she said the cigar smelled wonderful and wanted to try it. Her response each and every time she asked for the cigar (three or four times during the smoking of it) was “Wow that’s really good.”

By-The-Numbers
Pre-light: 2/2
Construction: 2/2
Flavor: 4.5/5
Value: 1/1
Total: 9.5/10

To recap the Debonaire Daybreak:

  • This is perfect specimen for a medium bodied cigar. It has a pleasant flavor profile that nearly any level of cigar smoker could enjoy.
  • To give it a 5/5 in flavor (and be the first Perfect 10 of the year). I felt that there needed to be more overall depth of flavor.
  • While the price point is right on the edge of comfort for me, I still think this cigar warrants a good value. If I were to guess, I bet the less expensive vitolas smoke just as well as the Toro size.
  • I was told pretty bluntly by my wife to buy more of these. So likely for Mother’s Day (or whenever I get around to ordering some – which will be soon), there will be more of these visiting our humidor.

A huge thanks once again to Drew Estate and Debonaire Cigars for the samples. Thank you so much for reading. I look forward to the next time I can share my thoughts with you.
