Libation Review: Seven Fathoms Premium Rum

Seven Fathoms Premium Rum

I had a small gathering of musician friends over a few weeks back to hang, eat homemade pizza from yours truly and indulge in adult beverages. As it is custom when that group of friends gather, it becomes a buffet of BYOB. At this meeting, I think there was a total of 14 different libations to sample. In preparation for the evening, I ventured across the river to my favorite liquor (among other things) store. I was in the mood for finding something new from Islay but was also looking for a non-whiskey to enjoy. I came across many of the easily-found rums but kept looking to find something new. Thankfully, it didn’t take long for me to find the bottle I am reviewing today.

The concept behind Seven Fathoms Premium Rum is that the rum, stored in American White Oak casks, is aged 42 feet (seven fathoms) off the coast of the Cayman Islands allowing the pressure of the ocean depths and its underwater currents to assist in the aging process. This explanation and the fact that I’ve never had any libations from the Cayman Islands was the catalyst for making a bottle purchase.

The rum pours and sits at what I would call a dark caramel color. The aromas coming from my whiskey glass weren’t very prominent but brought a mix of cane sugar and salt. The opening taste of the rum is lighter body at the start but once it hits the middle of the palette, you really begin to taste a balance of toffee and spice notes. The finish to me has a mix of cane sugar, spices and hints of salt with a moderate lingering on the palette.

I’ve smoked a few cigars with this rum and so far, it works well in the companion role. I feel it complements everything that I have smoked with it so far (medium and full bodied cigars) without getting in the way.

I regard the Seven Fathoms Premium Rum in the same vein as my favorite inexpensive rum. It’s well balanced in terms of sweetness and spice, it pairs with a cigar wonderfully and it will not break the bank as far as cost goes. And if you’ve near had the chance to pair a cigar with rum, now is the perfect time to do so. I mentioned the party I held at the start of the review. When the party ended and everyone left, I began to collect my bottles to take downstairs before I retired to the deck for a cigar. Half of this bottle was consumed in the couple hours my friends were over. The rum was very well received and it will be purchased again (and soon judging by how much is left).

Final Score: 9.5/10

Thank you very much for reading and I look forward to the next time I can share my thoughts with you.
