Background

My experience with the Villiger San’Doro Colorado goes back several years. I believe I saw them first at the IPCPR trade show in New Orleans in 2015. I reviewed it back in 2019 and while I liked it, I wasn’t blown away by it at the time. A few weeks ago I was surprised by a “care package” from Villiger that contained a trio of San’Doro Colorado Toros and a small bottle of Woodford Reserve Bourbon.

I gave a full review to Woodford Reserve earlier this year. I found it a very good bourbon for the roughly $30 price point, especially in these days when prices are exploding for nearly every whiskey on the market.

They billed this as a great pairing and I have no reason to doubt it…after all, one of my cardinal rules is that pretty much any cigar will pair well with pretty much any Bourbon. There are exceptions…but I haven’t found many.

Notes

The San’Doro Colorado had a rough and fairly dry wrapper that had notes of cedar, hay, and natural tobacco. The foot was earthy with a slighty sweet aroma to it. The cold draw had a bit of resistance to it and a mix of floral and hay flavors.

The whiskey was a medium-amber color and had a nice vanilla and oak aroma, with a touch of caramel and hard fruit. It was smooth and slightly sweet on the lips with touches of honey and vanilla before some spice made its way into the mix.

Fired up the Villiger had earth and cedar up front, followed by floral and slightly sweet notes and a touch of pepper fire at the end. The retrohale was more peppery than anything else.

So, all in all, it was a good cigar and a very nice bourbon, but I have to stick with my previous assessment of the cigar…I liked it, but didn’t ever come close to wanting to buy a whole box because of how it smoked either on its own or with the Woodford Reserve. I have seen some deals on whole boxes, though, so if you like this blend, it’s probably a good time to pick them up.
